157: Digital Painting Color Fundamentals and Hue Shifting

Learning color harmony and hue-shifting, or how to pick up lighter or darker colors without just going to darker or lighter pigments, but instead, by shifting the hue.

Hue Shifting

To pick up a lighter color relative to your current color: increase brightness, and then slide to a WARMER HUE:

To pick up a darker color relative to your current color: decrease brightness, and then slide to a COLDER HUE:

Practicing Digital Painting Tools and Hue Shifting

  • Paint RGB and CMYK cubes
  • Learn complimentaries
  • Learn hard and soft brushes, as well blending/mixing

I also experimented with every Blending and Mixing brush I had in Krita (see process image) in order to decide my favorite one. Turns out, there are many – which is bad, it can cause me confusion when painting later.

Previously I wrote that I decided to move on with Clip Paint Studio. I don’t remember what frustration I came into (I did this experiment in December), and I gave up on it and moved back to Krita.
